The story

The bat moves through a world that changes when the light disappears. In our circle, it belongs to water and to the unfamiliar spaces within a life: transitions, hidden feelings and paths that do not announce themselves in advance.

Your own way through. Imagine a path at dusk, familiar by day and full of new shapes as the light fades. Bartok gives that moment a place in our circle of Water. The bat becomes a companion for attentive exploration: listening, adjusting your pace and taking the next manageable step. Let it remind you that confidence can grow through practice, even while the way ahead is still unfolding.

Explore the symbolism

These allies are chosen with purpose: each brings a strength that complements your familiar. Begin with the circle we have drawn for you. Should another presence call more deeply, the final bond is yours to make.

The meaning behind these pairings

Our circle favours Fire with Air, and Water with Earth: affinities through which we explore intention, insight, feeling and grounding. Western esoteric tarot offers a historical framework for considering elemental relationships. Liber LXXVIII, Of the Dignities describes Fire–Water and Air–Earth as contrary and same-element cards as strengthening one another.

The animals’ elemental assignments and the particular circles recommended here belong to Eight Shadows. Each ally has a distinct symbolic role; historical and literary sources for the animals themselves are explored on their individual pages.

Meet the meaning behind Bartok

For the soul that finds its own way.

Attentive instinct. A quiet wish. The freedom to follow your own rhythm. Discover four ways the night wanderer’s story can become part of yours.

01 · An instinct for the unseen

You do not need every answer. Only your next step.

Some paths become clearer when you stop trying to see the whole journey at once. Many bats navigate through echolocation, reading returning echoes as they move. The Bat Conservation Trust describes this remarkable sensitivity to their surroundings. For Bartok, we take it as an image of attentive courage: listening closely, adjusting your course and discovering that uncertainty can still hold a way forward.

Perhaps you are entering a new place, making an unfamiliar choice, or learning to hear your own wishes beneath everyone else’s advice. This familiar can hold that intention close. Choose it as a reminder to take the next considered step, even while the horizon remains hidden. The night wanderer’s story begins with attention.

A little less certainty. A little more trust in your next step.

02 · A wish carried on wings

An unexpected creature. A hopeful meaning.

The bat has carried meanings far gentler than its shadow might suggest. In Chinese decorative art, it can express happiness and good fortune: the spoken word for bat echoes the word for blessing. The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents this symbolism on a ceremonial robe, where groups of five bats convey the Five Happinesses. It is a distinct cultural tradition, and a beautiful reminder that an animal’s meaning can change with the story around it.

For our own familiar, that reference opens a hopeful possibility. Bartok can become a small wish you choose to wear: for a welcoming new home, an open door, or a chapter with room for joy. Given to someone you love, it can carry a tender message: may good things find you, including the ones you cannot yet imagine.

Let the unfamiliar hold a little promise.

03 · At home after dusk

For the part of you that follows its own rhythm.

There is a particular freedom in the evening: the world grows quieter, familiar places soften, and thoughts you could not hear all day begin to surface. In Eight Shadows’s circle, Bartok belongs to Water, our language for sensitivity, hidden depths and finding your bearings through change. This is the meaning we give our night wanderer: a companion for the part of you that feels most alive beyond the obvious path.

The bat’s silhouette gives our twilight world a quiet companion: alert to change, moving through uncertainty one moment at a time. Wear Bartok for your independent spirit, your love of twilight, or the decision to build a life that fits your own rhythm. You do not have to explain every part of yourself to recognise it.

Somewhere between the familiar and the unknown, you recognise yourself.

04 · A familiar to keep close

Moonlit wings. A meaning of your own.

Bartok’s illustrated bat spreads its wings beneath a crescent moon, its fine gold-toned details framed by stars and foliage against a dark ground. A sculpted brass surround gives the medallion its distinctive outline. The included black braided waxed cord keeps the focus on that luminous nocturnal design, whether you wear it against an ivory blouse, a dark knit or the neckline of an evening dress.

Let it mark a first step, a private wish, or the pleasure of finding a creature that feels unexpectedly like you. It also makes a thoughtful choice for the friend whose unusual path you have always admired.

For a pair, we recommend Larka: steady roots beside Bartok’s attentive instinct. Add Beldam to complete the circle, bringing patient creation to the direction you discover. Meet both allies above, then choose the stories you want to carry together.

Carry your own way of finding the light.

Finding a way through the dark. The Bat Conservation Trust explains flight, feeding and echolocation. Bats are not blind, and species differ in their use of sound, smell and vision. Our themes of attentive courage and navigating uncertainty are symbolic interpretations of natural abilities.

A hopeful cultural meaning. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ceremonial robe records the bat’s association with happiness and the Five Happinesses in Chinese decorative art. We identify this as its own cultural context, not a rule of Western witchcraft. Our garden relief is imagined artwork, not a reproduction of the robe or an archaeological object.
